The registration fee covers the administrative costs of registering your vehicle with VicRoads. Though the rates may differ, this fee applies to both light vehicles and heavy vehicles. The fee is calculated using “fee units,” a value set by the State Treasurer and adjusted annually on July 1st.
For the 2024-2025 financial year, one fee unit equals $16.33, and the registration fee is set at 20.42 fee units.
Note: Electric vehicles are eligible for a discount of $100 on their registration fee.
Vehicle Type | Registration Fee |
---|---|
Petrol or diesel vehicle | 16.33 x 20.42 = $333.46 |
Electric vehicle | 16.33 x 20.42 - 100 = $233.46 |
While the VicRoads registration fees make up a significant portion of your total cost, there are additional fees you may need to pay depending on your circumstances:
Stamp duty, or motor vehicle duty, is a separate fee paid to the State Revenue Office. The amount is based on the market value of your vehicle and can be calculated using the following table:
Note: The market value includes the cost of the vehicle, modifications, accessories, and any other additional costs such as delivery charges.
Market Value | Stamp Duty Rate |
---|---|
Up to $76,950 | $8.40 for every $200 or part thereof |
$76,950.01 to $100,000 | $10.40 for every $200 or part thereof |
$100,000.01 to $150,000 | $14.00 for every $200 or part thereof |
More than $150,000 | $18.00 for every $200 or part thereof |
To give you a better idea, let’s calculate the stamp duty for a vehicle with a market value of $120,000:
The plate fee is the only fee to be paid to VicRoads separately. It is allocated towards manufacturing and issuing number plates for vehicles.
Similar to the registration fee, the plate fee is calculated using fee units.
For the 2024-2025 financial year, one fee unit equals $16.33, and the plate fee is set at 1.28 fee units per plate. Therefore, the plate fee for a standard set of number plates is $41.80.
